The lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) is a perennial shrub that grows well in Nova Scotia’s acidic Podzolic
soils. Pruning forces the lowbush blueberry into a biennial production cycle in which new and vigorous vegetative stems grow in the first (sprout) year, followed by flowering, pollination and fruit development in the second (crop) year, when the fruit is
harvested. Lowbush blueberries are usually fertilized in the sprout year to stimulate plant growth (Eaton, 1994) and not amended in the crop year.
