It is critical to consider both CCS technology as well as its associated
requirement of coal mining when addressing CCS deployment. On the
whole, it is increasingly important to establish links within the planning
and decision-making agencies so that CCS deployment can be holistically
addressed. Energy scenarios with CCS cannot be detached from
the technological realities and the supply chain issues arising from
reduced thermal efficiency due to CO2-capture. Development of holistic
CCS strategies, capable of incorporating technological, structural,
financial, and environmental factors, are encouraged. Such
joint-planning strategies can generate realistic options, be vital for
investor confidence, and ultimately create commercial investments in
all the supporting sectors needed to ensure successful CCS deployment
on large scales.
