rolling hills and beech woods and the familiar, reassuring vicinity of the urbane city of Basel? As soon as l begin to think about this question, l realize that my work has been influenced by many places.
When l concentrate on a specific site or place for which l am going to design a building, when l try to plumb its depths, its form, its history, and its sensuous qualities, images of other places start to invade this process of precise observation: images of places that l know and that once impressed me, images of ordinary or special places that l carry with me as inner visions of specific moods and qualities; images of architectural situations, which emanate from the world of art, of films, theater, or literature.
