For my poem analysis I chose the poem "God Lay Dead In Heaven," by Stephen Crane. When I first was looking at this poem I got a clear understanding at what it meant in my eyes. The main idea for this poem is expressing the word that God, the creator of all, is now dead and all hell is breaking lose.
In the verse "God lay dead in heaven; Angels sang the hymn of the end;" I got a idea in my mind that god was killed by Satan, the Devil. So the cause of this event makes the Angels sing a hymn for the end of the heavens. The author used imagery to express how the Angels wings were soaking in blood while they fell to earth. Again, this is just expressing the Angels are dead, soaked in blood, falling from heaven to earth where the Devil roams. " Turned black and sank. Then from the far caverns. Of dead sins. Came monsters, livid with desire. They fought, wrangled over the world, a morsel." In this part of the poem it expresses probably the main idea here how monsters, or demons are rising from the shadows of hell to rule over the earth with angry intent trying to feed on the souls of the weak. Now here's probably the big show coming up, " A woman's arms tried to shield the head of a sleeping man from the jaws of the final beast." The first thing that pops into my mind when I read this are these three people: Jesus, Mary, and Satan. Mary is trying to save Jesus, from the evil that surrounds him and closes in for the bite for his soul. Now this evil is the Devil. The Devil is the final boss in all that comes and Mary is protecting the child of God from him so he can probably face, and defeat the Devil later on.
When you look at this specific poem you can really see it in so many ways on whats going on, and who the author is trying to describe in this poem, but I think his main idea is revolving around the fact that God is dead and Heaven is falling along with its inhabitants. While this is happening, the Devils servants, Demons are taking over the Earth, while Mary protects Jesus from the clutches of the Devil. When I chose this poem I found it quite interesting to read as it got my mind thinking of what is happening to the world in this context. Just the way the author described it and how he used his words in order really made the poem stand out to me, as well as the sadness of the mood he made for it, which I loved.
