Progress Report: Delwood High School Book Fair
For some time, the members of the Delwood High School Book
Club have been organizing a book fair to benefit the school library.
The purposes for the book fair are to add books to the library’s current
collection and to provide free books to students.
The main responsibilities include obtaining book donations,
recruiting volunteers, and creating advertisements. In January, we
brainstormed ideas for adding books to the library with our sponsor,
Ms. Diaz, the school librarian. Then we divided responsibilities.
We came up with the idea for a book fair, which we thought would
be a fun way for our organization to support the library and help
other students.
My responsibility has been to contact local businesses for financial
support and civic groups for book donations. During February, I
contacted eight bookstores, and five offered to donate books. Three
of the stores have already sent their donations to the school.
This week, Karen Dannevik’s mother offered to help us promote
the book fair. She has agreed to donate one thousand buttons with
our logo. We will pick up the buttons a week before the fair. We can
pass them out to students a week before the fair.
Our only remaining problem is finding enough student volunteers.
Because our school requires one hundred hours of community
service by graduation, we hoped that more students would volunteer
in return for community service credit.
We still need to organize the books, train the volunteers we have,
and distribute flyers. Media advertising will begin next week, and
over the weekend we will hang the posters. I am proud that our
organization has been able to make our idea work so far.
