The grandstand and track and field area were later constructed
by cutting into the existing hillside to the east of the school building.
The cut material was used to fill in two large arroyos located in
the track areas. The grandstand was constructed over a section of
hillside that was mostly cut into the expansive bedrock. The grandstand
was constructed of concrete that was cast on grade. The concrete
slab was constructed with two shear walls that were excavated
into the bedrock to provide anchorage against downhill sliding. A
masonry block retaining wall approximately 1.2 m (4 ft) high was
constructed at the bottom of the grandstand to provide a vertical
separation between it and the track area.
