An effect of
NO on postharvest metabolism was first indicated by Leshem and
Haramaty (1996) who added NO to pea leaves and found a link
between NO and ethylene. Since then considerable research on
numerous commodities has demonstrated that postharvest
fumigation with NO gas or dipping in an NO-donor compound
can extend postharvest life by inhibiting ripening of climacteric
fruits and senescence of non-climacteric produce and by delaying
development of chilling injury and various physiological disorders
(Wills, 2015)
