Offering discounts to people who made big purchases was one way. For instance, Upwork might provide a discount to customers who bill a lot: the more money billed, the smaller Upwork's % fee is. Eliminating small transactions completely was an additional choice. At Upwork's current 10% fee, nearly 80% of all matches on the platform were under $500, making them unprofitable for the company. With $50 (or less) in revenue per transaction, it was impossible to turn a profit due to the combination of hosting expenses at Amazon Web Services (about 10% of total sales), reserves for fraud, customer support costs, and customer acquisition expenditures (more than 20% of total sales). Furthermore, the great majority of transactions only cost $500 or less.
