Research Design. While the emphasis of these papers is on measurement tools, the role of thoughtful research design in
applying these tools is evident. While issues of research design are well treated in a number of texts on evaluation, 1-4 two points deserve emphasis here. First, it is important to include comparison groups. Comparison groups can do much to distinguish the effects attributable to a nutrition education program from the potential influences of broader time trends in
eating patterns (i.e., secular trends) and the tendency of respondents to offer responses that they think will reflect well
on themselves and the nutrition educators who helped them (i.e., social desirability). There are a number of options to create comparison groups, including randomized assignment to alternative types of programs, randomized assignment of
matched units (e.g., schools, program offices, supermarkets, communities, or neighboring states). The appropriate
choice for a comparison group may be determined by the persistence and creativity of researchers based on the opportunities and practicalities of conducting nutrition education with low-income populations in their communities.
