Species’ invasive ability
- Invasions fail when the species does not posses traits necessary to survive
and reproduce in a new habitat.
- Therefore, habitat characteristic and species traits are determinant of
successful invasion (Booth et al., 2003)
- A common characteristic of successful invasive weeds:
• Few natural enemies
– Predators
– Competitors
– Parasites and diseases
• High reproductive rate
• Long lived
• Good dispersal
• Generalists (adapted to wide range of environmental condition)
• Pioneer species
