To safeguard against complications such as a sickle cell crisis in individuals with sickle cell disease, the folowing measures should be considered during labor: (1) oxygen supplementation to the mother, (2) administration of intravenous fluids, (3) adequate fetal monitoring, (4) maternal hemoglobin monitoring, and (5) administration of prophylactic antibiotics if operative delivery is necessary or if urinary tract infection present (Oats & Abraham, 2005).
