Overpack
It is an enclosure used by a single shipper to contain one or more packages to from one handing unitfor convenience of handing and stowage. Dangerous goods packages contained in an overpack must be properly packed. Marked and ladelled and in proper condition according to the regulations. The overpack will display required labels and markings.
Note
- An aircraft unit load device (ULD) is not considered as overpack.
- Shrink-wrap or banding may be considered an overpack.
8.6.3. Types of Packaging
8.6.3.1. UN Specification packaging (DGR 5.0.7, 6.0 to 6.4)
Packaging must be subjected to performance tests designed to ensure that the packages tested will not lose any of their contents under normal transport conditions. The severity of the tests on the packaging is dependent on the degree of danger of the intended contents as expressed by their packing group. These packages will bear UN markings (see para 8.7 below)
8.6.3.2. Limited Quantity packaging (DGR 2.7, 5.0.3, 7.1.5.3)
Limited Quantity packaging provisions recognize that may dangerous goods in small quantities present a reduced hazard, and can be safely transported in good quality packaging. These Limited Quantity packaging must be made to the same construction requirements as the un testing they must be capable of withstanding a 1.2 meter (4 ft) drop test and a 24 hour stacking test as described in DGR 6.7 Such packaging must be marked with the Limited Quantities mark to indicate are used for dangerous goods that are permitted in Limited Quantities.

8.6.3.3. Other Types of Packaging
Certain packing instructions do not require UN Specification Packaging. For example, some Consumer Commodities Can be shipped in packaging of a type intended for retail sale provided they are packed according to DGR Packing Instruction 910. See also Packing Instructions 805, 904.
8.6.3.4. Excepted Quantities
Very small quantities of dangerous goods are excepted from the packaging, markings, loading and documentation requirements applicable for all other dangerous goods. The packages bear a special label (see para 8.8.3). Nevertheless, any packages containing excepted of dangerous goods will not be accepted for transport by THAI.
