As we predicted, our hosts reflect different levels of mycorrhizal
dependence because our host with low mycorrhizal dependency
(Plantago) showed no change in shoot biomass when inoculated
with AM fungi and our highly dependent host (Allium) was significantly
larger when grown with AM fungi when nutrients were most
limiting (Fig. 3, p = 0.02, F = 2.855). For root biomass, there were
no significant effects of inoculation or fertilization (Supplemental
Information Figs. S1, and Table S1).
