(posterior margin without indentation), ventral
end nearly circular (without anterior spine or
projection); caudal-fin rays without internal pigmentation;
illicium short, nearly completely enveloped
by escal bulb (esca nearly sessile on
snout) to about three times length of escal bulb
in largest known specimens; pterygiophore of
illicium emerging on snout from between frontal
bones, anterior end exposed (especially in
larger specimens), posterior end concealed beneath
skin; first ray of dorsal fin well developed;
dorsal-fin rays usually 5 (6 in two of smallest
known specimens, 10.8–11.8 mm; see Bertelsen
and Pietsch, 1977:181, table 2); anal-fin rays 5;
pectoral-fin lobe short and broad, shorter than
longest rays of pectoral fin; pectoral-fin rays 19–
24 (Table 1); skin naked, without dermal spinules;
darkly pigmented skin of caudal peduncle
extending well past base of caudal fin (diagnosis
based primarily on eight females, 52–
132 mm).
