Pollution can be seen in the air in large cities in China. Urban haze fills the air of the capital city of Beijing, with the appearance of fog. Ding Yihui, of the China National Climate Center, explains that “This smog is mainly smoke though, not fog which would be comprised of water vapor” (China Revs Up 2004). In the large cities of China, substances such as lead, sulfur, carbon monoxide and tiny particles of dust are in the air (China Revs Up 2004). This has not only posed a problem for the environment of China, but also for its people. The table in Figure 2 shows that China has the highest number of premature deaths due to air pollution in the world. Respiratory diseases are a huge problem in the country, causing ten times as many fatalities as in the United States (China Revs Up 2004).
