Organizational culture serves to encourage as well as constrain employee behavior. Shared values, norms, and beliefs
define an organization’s culture, and these in turn play a strong role in influencing or sanctioning allowable employee
behavior (Schein,1985). While some organizations’ recruitment and selection processes ensure a good immediate fit between
the organization’s and a new member’s belief systems, such immediate harmony is not always achieved. It is on these
occasions that the organization’s culture will standardize members’ behavior and shape it in line with the organization’s
accepted norms.
