The productivity patterns determined by our micro-algae
growth model are plotted in Fig. 4. The plotted productivity trends
follow the irradiance levels (not plotted here) throughout a
calendar year. Due to sunlight saturation and sequential inhibition,
the productivity in summer is negatively affected (especially for
Huelva and Bissau) but this is partly compensated by more favourable
temperatures. As a result of the higher peak irradiance levels
for Huelva compared to Bissau, the peak productivity of Huelva
exceeds peak productivity of Bissau. Because of the flat distribution
of sunlight over the year, average production for Bissau is highest,
even with almost comparable total annual irradiance levels. The
model displays no growth in winter months for Uppsala due to
the low temperatures.
