The need for appropriate selection

The need for appropriate selection of waste disposal site has arose as the result of exploration, production and processing of mineral deposits activities. Due to lack of safe utilization methods on surface the deposition in underground formation through injection wells became the preferred solution. This technology has been successfully implemented worldwide since 1950's mainly because of low cost. In Poland, Borzecin structure, which meets required ecological and technological criteria has been selected for those purposes. Reservoir and geological characteristics of this field will be thoroughly detailed giving the reader of this paper the opportunity to familiarize with main formation and mineral features. This paper will detail the criteria a formation has to meet to be considered safe waste disposal site. Individual waste type will be meticulously specified and assigned class and group in line with obtained concession. Environmental risk analyses will be performed in subsequent sections of this article i.e. identification of hazards to: soil, underground and surface waters, atmosphere, climate, noise, radioactivity, landscape, fauna and flora, humans. Additionally hazards as the result of accidents will be detailed. For every and each of identified hazards criteria of occurrence will be comprehensively described and the available methods of counter measures proposed.
