Results of the Gais et
al. (2007) experiment in which the brain
activity of participants’ in the sleep and
awake groups was measured as they were
initially learning a list of word pairs and
as they were remembering the list two
days later. Activity in the hippocampus
increased for participants in the sleep
group, but decreased for participants in
the awake group. Also, in data not shown
here, the overall level of activity in the
hippocampus was greater during testing
in the sleep group
