The concentration of
TMAO determined in the aqueous humour from a cod, was
found to be considerable lower than that reported for cartilaginous
fishes (Doolittle et al., 1960). The TMAO levels in
plasma, muscles, blood and other tissues, of teleosts are reported
to be markedly lower than those in elasmobranchs because
of different metabolism of trimethylamines in these two
types of fish (King and Goldstein, 1983; Daikoku et al., 1987;
Charest et al., 1988).
