Water and feeding management procedures and feeding schemes
are summarized in Fig. 1. Tanks were filled with sea water and three
farmed unicellular green algae species (Clorella minutissima, Isochrisis
galbiana, Nannochloropsis suecica) were introduced into the tanks
2 days before the fish larvae until a density of 105 cells/mL was
reached in each tank. Initial filling and subsequent renewal during
rearing used natural seawater collected from an artificial channel
directly connected to the sea and only filtered (no sterilization
occurred) through a 150 μm mesh. Natural phytoplankton blooms
were allowed to develop within the tanks and no mineral or organic
enrichment was added to avoid excessive proliferation.
