Our histological observations of the host reaction
agree with the findings of Meyers and co-workers
(1978) during the first days after DEC treatment of
streptocerciasis. They also accord with immunohistological
studies on the reaction of neutrophils and
eosinophils to the mf of O. volvulus during the first
days after administration of transepidermal DEC
(Gutiérrez-Pen˜ a et al. 1996). Bhardwaj et al. (1992)
demonstrated the role of L1 protein as a marker for
acute inflammatory lesions. Knab et al. (1994) also
saw the invasion of L1 protein-positive macrophages
in lymph nodes of onchocerciasis patients after
ivermectin treatment. We can assume that most
M. streptocerca mf leave the skin after ivermectin
treatment, as in onchocerciasis. Disintegrating mf
found on day 6 after treatment probably were parasites
that had been released by the female worm
after the administration of the drug. Otherwise mf
would have completely disappeared at that time.
