A fast-loading page will greatly enhance the first impression of a visited site, and hopefully attract the viewer back for repeat visits. For the dial-up user, no page is going to appear instantly, and frustration is inevitable; the aim should be to minimize it. The way in which a page is rendered by a browser follows Western text reading, moving from left to right and top to bottom, so content will be revealed in this order. Place something simple at the top left, and the user will at least have the impression of progress.
