Despite the economic and social costs caused by R.argentiventer, its habitat use and movements in the rice agro-ecosystems of Vietnam is not well understood. In
West Java, Indonesia, there are two lowland irrigated rice crops produced each year corresponding with the wet and dry seasons. Rattus argentiventer accounted for >95% of
rodent species captured (LEUNG et al., 1999) and were found to have home ranges of 1-3 ha, with little differences between males and females, with smaller home range in the breeding season compared to the non-breeding season (BROWN et al., 2001). They mostly utilised banks (burrows) during the tillering stage of the rice crop (non-breeding period), but switch to daytime use of rice paddies throughout the ripening stage of the rice crop (breeding period) (BROWN et al., 2001).
