Like the trams, the majority of Amsterdam’s buses set out from Central Station, but they soon branch out from the city center and largely complement the tram network.
The underground system comprises only three lines, all terminating at Central Station. Mainly used by commuters, it is of little use to tourists as it only covers four stations in the center, all on the eastern side—Amsterdam CS, Nieuwmarkt, Waterlooplein, and Weesperplein.
Bicycle is the ideal form of transport in Amsterdam. More than half a million people cycle to school or work, and use a bicycle to do the shopping or go out in the evening. The city’s traffic system is biased in favor of bicycles, with a network of integrated cycle lanes, dedicated traffic lights and road signs, and special routes linking different parts of the city.
