Forests are one of our most important resources. They produce most of the oxygen we need to breathe. The destruction of the world's forests is causing large climate changes and once fertile areas are becoming barren land. An example of this can be found in Eastern Thailand, where the removal of great areas of forest has caused changes in the local rainfall pattern, which create problems for famers.
Forests in Thailand can be divided into two main types.
Tropical evergreen forests have plants and trees which have leaves for the whole year. They grow in coastal and lowland areas that have warm winters and a lot of rain.
There ae three types of evergreen forest in the North and Central plains and Southern Thailand.
- Lowland evergreen forest
- Dry or semi-evergreen forest
- Hilly evergreen forests
