Staff play a critical role in the support of student mental health on campus;
whether in professional roles as clinicians in CAPS, physicians in
the Student Health Service, or as members of the SIS team, academic advisors
or graduate program coordinators. Staff often see students in different
contexts than the faculty, and students may be more likely to turn
to them for information and help than faculty (for example, a number of
graduate students indicated to us that they would be more likely to confide
in the program coordinator of their graduate group than their faculty advisor).
As important partners in caring for students, staff should be educated
about campus resources and indicators of distress. A “MentalHealth.edu”
module could be created for Penn staff—modeled after the Alcohol.edu
module and be made available to new and continuing staff (as well as faculty)
through KnowledgeLink. We could also provide supplemental training
for employees during the academic year through brown bag seminars
and workshops led by appropriate professionals in CAPS, the Division of
the Vice Provost for University Life, and the Division of Public Safety in
partnership with Penn’s Division of Human Resources.
