Before You Begin
Determine that your institution meets all of the eligibility requirements.
If your institution is eligible, you will need to provide some important information. You will not be able to request a domain name unless you provide the following information.
Domain Name - The name that you request must reasonably represent the Registrant and not be generic. Review .edu domain name policies.
Institution Name – This is the legal name and address of the eligible institution requesting the domain name. Review .edu eligibility requirements.
Password – You will need to set an initial password that you will use to manage your domain.
Administrative Contact – This is the name of a person or group who is responsible for the administrative details of the domain name.
Technical Contact – This is the name of a person or group who is responsible for the technical details of the domain name.
Billing Contact – This is the name of a person or group who is responsible for billing on the domain name.
Primary and Secondary Domain Name Servers – These name servers should be set up to properly respond to queries for the domain. The name servers must be publicly accessible (have public IP addresses). Some institutions house their own domain name servers while others use an Internet service provider for this function. Check with your ISP before you start if you are unsure.
PLEASE NOTE: Registrants of names in the .edu domain are required to provide accurate contact information and to update this information as it changes. Contact information for .edu domain names is public and available from the EDUCAUSE Whois server.
When you are ready to request a .edu domain name, start by checking the availability of your desired .edu domain name with the .edu Availability Lookup below. NOTE: For those institutions outside the United States please see the section below.
For Institutions Outside the United States
As specified by the Department of Commerce, only postsecondary "US institutions" that are institutionally accredited by one of the agencies on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies may apply for new names in the .edu domain. We thus require applicants to be located within the United States (including US territories and possessions); or to be licensed, chartered, or incorporated within the United States (including US territories and possessions); or to be otherwise officially recognized by a US state or federal government agency (including US territories and possessions).
If you are not located within the United States but believe you meet one of the other qualifications as a US institution AND are institutionally accredited by one of the Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies we recognize, please contact edu@educause.edu.
For Institutions Within the United States
To obtain an Internet name in the .edu domain, your institution must be a postsecondary institution that is institutionally accredited by an agency on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies (see recognized accrediting bodies). (Please see the .edu Eligibility section for more information.)
Use the availability lookup below to see if your desired .edu name is available. If so, follow the steps to verify your institution is eligible. If your institution is eligible, your request will be processed in the order in which it is received.
