The Women’s Health Study is a randomized, double-blind,
placebo-controlled trial designed to test the efficacy of low-dose
aspirin and vitamin E in the primary prevention of CVD and cancer
among 39 876 female health professionals who were without
heart disease, stroke, or cancer (other than nonmelanoma skin
cancer) at baseline. Detailed information on fruit and vegetable
intake was provided by 39 127 (98%) of the randomly assigned
participants, who completed a 131-item validated SFFQ at baseline
in 1993 (14). This study was conducted according to the ethical
guidelines of Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
