Previous results from Kim et al. (1999) have shown
that the porcine mammary gland undergoes hypertrophy
and hyperplasia during a 28-d lactation when sows
are provided adequate nutrients. Under practical situations,
sows often consume different amounts of nutrients,
and the effect of nutrient intake on mammary
growth is unknown. Goodwill et al. (1996) showed that
mammary gland growth is affected by protein intake
during lactation in rats. The purpose of this experiment
was to determine how different energy and protein intakes
affect mammary gland growth in lactating sows.
