Foundry workers are continuously exposed to heat, noise, dust, fumes and gasses similarly the forging workers are exposed to dust, gasses, noise, temperature and chemicals among other pollutants. The level of exposure to these hazards pollutants mainly depends upon the level of occupational hygiene and pollution control methods being implemented. Exposure to these pollutants can be reduced mainly by implementing pollution control methods and secondly by providing personal protective equipments to the exposed workers. Among all these occupational hazards, heat is considered to be the prime factors affecting the productivity/ performance of an individual. 9+ A main source of heat stress in hot forging industry is oil fired furnace in which the work piece is heated above 800oC and then the work piece is transferred to the die of the forge hammer. The worker transferring the hot work piece from furnace to forging die, forger, hammer operator, furnace feeder and material handling after the forging were found exposed to heat stress. In casting units mainly the heat exposure is at melting process (at Cupola/Induction furnaces), pouring process form Cupola / Induction furnace into crucible/ladle, carrying and then finally pouring to the mould. While working in heat the human body works at its best within a narrow temperature range. Shift of 2°C or more above or below the body’s normal temperature of 37°C can begin problems to happen. The body’s core temperature, the temperature of the brain, heart and other organs is 37°C. In most of the SSI especially the iron & steel units where heavy forging presses and drop hammers are main machinery assets and noise is an integral part of machinery in operation therefore it is being accepted as a necessary evil. The work place in most of the SSI is very congested due to lack of availability of space. The simultaneous running of blanking and punching presses, drop hammers grinders and barrels etc. in forging units’ machine moulding, fettling and grinding operations in casting units make the shops very noisy.
