To reinforce newly acquired skills, the patient rehearsed them by role-playing a triggering
situation from the past. The interventionist—playing the role of the patient’s
closest source of support, perhaps, for these behaviors in everyday life—aided him/her
to enact new, healthy responses to previously triggering situations. Role-plays provided
opportunities for hands-on practice and development and for enhancing self-efficacy.
The session concluded by asking the patient to formulate two realistic goals that were
within the realm of intervention content, possible to reach, and thus linked to the primary
outcomes.
