Despite a history which once saw children betrothed at very young ages by their families, a love match is behind most modern Romanian marriages.
Although it’s not unheard of for a Romanian suitor to surprise his intended with a ring and proposal, the general cultural custom is for discussion first, so the majority of males might talk to their girl and ask her what she thinks about marriage, rather than just popping the question. The couple might well also decide to discuss things with their parents too, if not before the event, then definitely very soon afterwards. This can be quite a formal affair, so if you have been proposed to / are proposing to a Romanian and are being taken home to “meet the parents”, it’s a dress-up occasion, jeans and trainers just won’t cut it … and can be seen as an insult to those very same parents you’re trying to impress!
With that in mind, it’s not customary to buy the engagement ring beforehand. This is usually bought after that “yes [please]” moment, and is traditionally a plain gold band. This is worn on the right hand until marriage then swaps across to the left as part of the marriage ceremony.
