Greenwich Village is west of Broadway, between 14th Street and Houston Street. It got its name from Greenwich in south-east London when the British were in New York before the War of Independence. Many famous artists and writers lived in the old houses on the little streets of Greenwich Village; Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Jackson Pollock, Jack Kerouac, and Ginsberg all lived here. There are interesting shops, cafés, art galleries, jazz clubs, and theatres.
