Despite the limitations of the present study, it is believed the data obtained are of utmost importance, especially when considering that, in general, speech disorders were more frequent between 5 and 8 years of age, with 24.8% of children concomitantly showing more than one alteration. This demonstrates that speech intelligibility may be impaired at an age range (5-8 years) during which the interaction with peers is important for development and when promptness to learn how to read and write is being established. Therefore, mouth breathers, in addition to the risk of delayed speech development, can have difficulties in socialization and at school, regarding literacy and its subsequent process.
