Flow charts are graphic representations of various steps
or procedures involved in a process. The chart typically
depicts a set of sequential events leading to an
outcome. Flow charts can help employees understand
the actual or desired flow of information, paper, raw
materials, and/or finished products. Flow charting
makes use of such symbols as double rectangles
(critical steps), ovals (beginnings and endings), arrows
(movement and direction), rectangles (activities not
involving a decision), diamonds (alternative decisions),
and exaggerated capital "D"s (delays or holds).
