Sitting majestically on a small, hilly island just north off Koh Samui, the Big Buddha seems like one calm, divine observer of daily human life. Given the Thai name of Wat Phra Yai, the golden meditating Buddha statue was constructed in the early 1970s and has been one of the most popular crowd puller for tourists ever since. The Big Buddha ponders over the island of Koh Faan and due to it's size can be seen from very far away. In fact, if you are flying to Koh Samui, this is one of the first monuments you are going to spot as you scale down the skies.
It is believed that the posture of the Big Buddha, sitting with right hand facing down and the left palm resting on the lap, which is locally referred to as the Mara posture, reflects Buddha’s journey, specifically the part where he learned to overcome the charm of temptations, all by remaining meditating and remaining calm. The pose is representative of purity, enlightenment and steadfastness. The temple's base is a vast courtyard where you can pick up religious artefacts, clothing, amulets and souvenirs. There are two other Buddha images encased in pavilions here. You can also find some food stalls over here, to enjoy a quick snack or a small meal. A beautiful staircase, complete with a colourful design of a dragon leads you up to the platform area on which the Buddha sits.
