The aim of this study was to examine the SIP abilities of MR children,
using Dodge's model. The accuracy of interpretation of intent to clearly hostile
and accidental social cues, and attributions to ambiguous cues (both aspects of
Step 2 of Dodge's model), and the responses to the three types of cues (Step 3
of Dodge's model) were compared in groups of mild MR, CA-matched and
MA-matched children, using six sets of drawings focussing on provocation situations.
It was hypothesised that for all SIP measures, the MR and MAmatched
groups would not differ from each other and that the MR group
would generally be less accurate and more hostile in attributions and responses
than the CA-matched group, especially after aggression and hyperactivity are
partialed out.
