In Thailand disability is often seen as payback for sins committed in an earlier life.
The disabled are seldom integrated into daily life. They are often perceived as intellectually inferior, unclean, a burden on society, and in rural areas are often viewed as possessed of evil spirits.
I would like to see our leaders address disability issues at both a grassroots and national level by promoting a more compassionate and informed attitude using the resources of our regional and national media, as well as within the resources of our religious institutions. I would like to see our society take positive steps to include rather than ignore or exclude our disabled citizens. We can do it! Thais are a generous people and with a broader base of positive educational support attitudes can change.
