Although the ionizing agents of the D layer
are still the object of intense study, solar L-alpha (121.6 nm) radiation appears to
be the most important for ionizing NO, solar X-rays (<0.8 nm) for ionizing N2,
O2, and Ar, solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation (λ < 111.8 nm) for ionizing unstable
O2, and galactic cosmic rays for ionizing all atmospheric constituents (Fig. 2.24).
