Methodology
Lean Manufacturing Tools
For seven types of wastes frequently identified in industries (Table 1), various lean tools have been proposed for effective utilization of resources. Although, tools are of generic nature, application of a selected bundle of tools and their sequence must be considered judiciously in a specific situation depending on external and internal operating conditions. As most of the tools are self-explanatory, few important tools are defined in Table 2.
Survey Studies
Geographical location for chemical, textile, pharmaceutical, electronics assembly and FMCG industry are clustered in and around Mumbai and the metal extraction, metal processing and secondary industries are located in Eastern India. An exhaustive study was attempted by visiting CM and DM industries (Table 3). The survey was made by circulating questionnaire to production executives, shop floor supervisors and key management personnel (Appendix I). This was again substantiated by making observations on production facility, Production Planning and Control (PPC) setup and Management Information System (MIS) department. The first part of questionnaire deals with primary information related to the organisation and the respondent. It gave the information about the type of industries (small/medium/large), method of operation (CM/DM) and type of output. This also gives an idea about the PPC strategy followed.
