The accuracy of the AAS method was evaluated by the percentage recovery of the standard heavy metals added to the samples of ginger rhizome before carrying out the digestion of sample. Recoveries were calculated as percentages of the amount found in the
sample solution spiked with known amounts of standard heavy metals. One sample of ginger rhizome was accurately weighed in triplicate and transferred into flasks. Samples were spiked with Pb, Cd, Hg and As standard solutions at three different concentrations 0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 lg/g. The prepared solutions were used for heavy metal recovery studies. Recovered samples were extracted and analyzed as given in the procedure above. The total amount of each compound was calculated from the corresponding calibration curve and the recovery of each compound was obtained
using the following equation: Recovery (%) = (amount foundamount contained)/amount spiked 100%. The recoveries ranged from 95.46% to 98.34% for Pb, Cd, Hg and As in all the cases. Limit of quantification (LOQ) were determined by dilution until the
response level of the sample was ten times (S/N = 10:1) that of noise. The limits of quantification for Pb, As and Hg was 0.01 and Cd 0.001 lg/g.
