4. Conclusions
In the present study, the EC values of the three composting piles at the end of 40 days of composting were about 1 mS/cm, whichwere within the optimum range for the use of the compost as a fertilizer. The solar reactor improved the degradation process,decreasing the TOC in the final compost and reducing the period of maturity. Furthermore, the solar reactor achieved conversion of more ammonia to nitrate than the other two reactors. As the loss of nitrogen is mainly owing to ammonia volatilization, the solar reactor demonstrated the lowest nitrogen loss. Moreover, the GI values of the composts obtained from the three reactors were above 70%, and the sludge obtained from the solar reactor presented the highest GI. With regard to the pot experiments,the mature sludge obtained from the solar reactor produced the
best results, exhibiting obvious advantages. In conclusion, the composted sludge obtained by utilizing solar energy showed favorable fertilizer effect and potential for application, particularly in agriculture, and could neutralize soil acidity and supply organic matter with conditioners such as sawdust and straw.
