The desert presents a particularly harsh environment for its inhabitants, as it tends to contain very little water. Life forms that evolve here are therefore usually good at retaining what little water they find. Cacti are a very good example of this. Most people are aware of their a ability to survive in these harsh, unforgiving conditions where water is extremely scarce. Another common survival trait in the desert is the ability to burrow. In some desert, animals must find a way to project themselves from the hot sun and dry conditions. For this reason, most hot and dry desert predators are nocturnal. Surprisingly, in cold desert types animals must burrow for the opposite reason. With such a severe decrease in temperature, animals must find protection from the cold. Because of these similar survival skills, it is not unusual to find similar animals in different dessert types.
