To improve urban mobility while protecting the environment,the city of Bogota introduced a bus rapid transit systemin 2000. Baptized Transmilenio, it was one of the first networks of its kind on the continent. The buses operate on hundreds of kilometers of dedicated bus lanes, and at fixedtimes, providing fast and reliable transportation for up to 1.5 million people every day. Fixed prices, lower than otherforms of transport, ensure its widespread use.
