As a part of employee benefit, pickles provided at company canteen are offered free at the expense of the company. We carried out investigation on actual consumption of pickles in the canteen, and found that 475 out of 950 canteen users were taking free pickles. And out of those 475 dishes, we found that 50 dishes, which accounts for 10%, are wasted as leftovers.
As we conducted hearings about the reason, we found that many people take dishes of pickles without thinking in a similar manner of taking trays and cups because pickles were provided near the canteen entrance together with trays, chopsticks and cups.
For example, even through someone takes the dish of pickles at the entrance, one would leave the pickles because he later chose Chinese noodles or curry and rice which would not match with pickles.
According to the fact that pickles will be eaten together with rice, we changed the place of providing pickles from the canteen entrance to the place next to the rice.
As a result, the percentage of people who take pickles has decreased to 33% because only those who really need them are now taking them. Consequently, the leftovers of pickles have decreased to 2% (9 dishes) and we managed to eliminate the waste.
