Japanese perspective on “note taking”
For promoting students’ note taking capable Japanese teachers try to teach how to arrange notes, as well as how to solve problems. As note writing is regarded as part of children’s mathematical activities, it is about more than just copying correct answers from the blackboard children may note a lot of cognitive information however, they also should note meta-cognitive issues and affective issues that can remind them of the exact mathematical activities they have done by themselves.
Note writing can also play an important role in children’s learning, because they can learn mathematics by writing, through writing, or even in writing itself as part of their learning activities. Children can note not only their problem-solving procedures and answers could have arrived at, but also important points for their further mathematics learning, good ideas from their friends, their own summaries and reviews, statements of meta cognition and emotion and so on.
