These studies on classroom seating and social relationships focused mainly on likeability, which is
one indicator of social status (Cillessen & Marks, 2011; LaFontana & Cillessen, 2002). Importantly, social
status is also indicated by popularity, reflecting impact and visibility in the group rather than likeability
(LaFontana & Cillessen, 2002; Parkhurst & Hopmeyer, 1998). Likeability and popularity are related but
distinct measures of social status with unique emotional, cognitive, and behavioral correlates (Mayeux,
Houser, & Dyches, 2011). The association between classroom seating and peer status, therefore, may
differ depending on which type of status is considered. In the current studies, we examined both constructs
and their unique associations with proximity between students in the classroom.
