in patients, with a multi-episode schizophrenia spectrum
disorder, who were hospitalized or unstable due to medication
nonadherence. These so-called “revolving door”
patients generally have poor social functioning and an
unfavorable prognosis, and therefore improvement of
their medication adherence is urgently needed.20 The current
study explicitly aimed to include this severely disturbed
group of patients, who are often either excluded
from studies or are unwilling to participate. To find a possible
explanation for the unequivocal results on the effect
of MI on adherence so far, a second aim of the study was
to investigate whether specific subgroups of patients may
benefit more from this intervention than others. As there
are several factors associated with nonadherence,1 we
aimed to explore whether known risk factors for nonadherence
such as cannabis use, illness duration, and route
of medication administration, along with gender and age,
may mediate effectiveness of MI
