The effect
of chloride ions upon the pH within the pit was not taken into account. These
and other factors will significantly affect the balance between the production and loss
of hydrogen ions, and therefore the internal pH, of a real pit. The deterministic nature
of the product of internal pit current density and pit depth suggested by Galvele
[26] therefore cannot be applied to real pits. This is demonstrated by two current
traces of stable pits, that is pits that cause a gradual increase in the potentiostatically
measured current, that are displayed in Figs. 1 and 2.
